Given Donald Trump's unorthodox ascension to the White House, one GOP strategist thinks that the president-elect's rejection of some conservative principles may help him be an "effective president," saying, "there's a lot of Democrat in Donald Trump."

Alex Castellanos told David Axelrod on "The Axe Files" podcast that there's also "a lot of Republican in Donald Trump," but that it's the result — not the ideology — that makes Trump unique and potentially effective.

To wit — Democratic Sens. Chuck Schumer and the liberal progressive Elizabeth Warren have both recently said they could work with Trump on certain issues.

"He's a dealmaker. He always starts somewhere beyond where he hopes to end up," Castellanos told Axelrod. "I think in many ways Donald Trump is a corporatist. He's a CEO — not, in many ways, unlike Mitt Romney."

CBS News reported there are several issues on which Democrats and Trump agree:

  • Preventing the merger of AT&T and Time Warner.
  • The reworking of Glass-Steagall that mandates a separation between commercial and investment banks.
  • The elimination of the "carried interest deduction" loophole.
  • The protection of Social Security.
  • Opposition to trade agreements, like TPP.
  • Paid maternity leave.

Trump "spoke of the need to reform our trade deals so they aren't raw deals for the American people," Warren said in a recent speech.

"He said he will not cut Social Security benefits. He talked about the need to address the rising cost of college and about helping working parents struggling with the high cost of child care."
