A Republican senator is introducing two bills on Thursday aimed at women's pay issues, specifically equal pay and paid leave.

"I think it's an issue that to be honest, that we as a party have not taken a high profile on," Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., told Politico in an interview. "Everybody supports equal pay, and sometimes we don't do a good job of messaging and of showing people and coming up with new ideas."

The first bill would change the language of federal law, preventing women from being punished for discussing or requesting salary information. Similar bills have been supported by multiple Democratic senators, according to Fischer's office.

Her second bill, which used to be called the Strong Families Act, would grant companies a two-year tax credit if they gave employees a minimum two weeks of paid leave.

Politico notes that President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka advocated for equal pay and paid leave when she spoke at the Republican National Convention.

"Everyone believes in equal pay for equal work. Everyone believes in that. That is current law," Fischer said.

"We want to see the current law upheld, and to try to make this into a war on women, I just think it's a soundbite that I believe most women are starting to realize is overused."
