Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush seemed to criticize former presidential candidate Mitt Romney while speaking in Washington, D.C., saying that recent GOP presidential candidates have failed to connect with America's diverse electorate.

Bush was holding a session with almost 40 trade association executives Tuesday, when he made comparisons between himself and Romney in light of his own potential run for the White House in 2016, The Washington Post is reporting.

He addressed topics from his public life, including education, immigration and running for office as well as topics relating to a political campaign such as outreach and empathy.

However, not all mention of Romney was negative, he also said that if the former Massachusetts governor had won the presidency in 2012, the country would be better off for it.

One of the attendees told The Post that "connection was a big theme."

While the event was not technically a fundraiser, there were donation forms available for those attending the meetings with the Florida Republican.

The event was hosted by the National Association of Wholesaler Distributors and was attended by trade association executives, lobbyists and donors. Dirk Van Dongen, the group's head lobbyist, is a GOP donor and Bush supporter.

After the meetings, a dinner was held at the home of Fred Malek, a longtime friend of the Bush family and veteran GOP fundraiser.

Bush posted a response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address following the dinner on his Facebook page: "It's unfortunate President Obama wants to use the tax code to divide us — instead of proposing reforms to create economic opportunity for every American. We can do better.

"My friend Joni Ernst offered a great contrast, outlining a positive, conservative vision for reform," he said.

"I hope President Obama will be mindful of the strong message American voters sent in November and will work with our new Congressional majority on achieving solutions we know have broad-based appeal," Bush added.
