Florida Congressman Carlos Curbelo on Tuesday night said that President Donald Trump may have committed an "impeachable offense," making him the first Republican on Capitol Hill to make the case for it.

"Obstruction of justice is an impeachable offense. That is an allegation we have to take very seriously," Curbelo told CBS4 Miami on Tuesday night. "That doesn't mean it happened, but if this story is accurate, it may have happened."

Curbelo's comments came shortly after a New York Times report of a James Comey memo that said Trump made an effort to get the former FBI director to drop an investigation into Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

"Any effort to dissuade federal agents from proceeding with an investigation is very serious and could be construed as obstruction of justice," Curbelo also said on CNN. "We've seen that these obstruction of justice cases can get ugly very fast. I'm not accusing anyone. We don't know yet. But obstruction of justice … has been considered an impeachable offense. It may be something very serious, it may be nothing."

Regardless of the outcome of that investigation, Curbelo had a message for the White House.

"This daily dose of controversy, of scandal, of instability is bad for the government and I think it's also very taxing on the American people," Curbelo told CNN. "People in this country are talking about politics every day, 24/7, and that is very unhealthy because the reason we're talking about it is because of all the controversy, the divisions, the tenor of our politics. So I would urge the White House … we really need to try to reset here because the American people are quickly losing the trust and confidence in our government."
