President Barack Obama's foreign policy is not addressing the challenges of domestic safety and the security threats facing the United States and the world, but the House Republicans' "Better Way" plan  includes specific ideas to strengthen national security, Rep. Mimi Walters said in Saturday's GOP address

"If we've learned anything over the past eight years, it's that the president's foreign policy is not doing the job,” the California Republican said. "Our plan includes 67 specific ideas to strengthen our national security. ...America will be safe only when we are strong. And I believe our plan will accomplish just that.”

One needs to look no further than the president's vanishing "red line" in Syria, the failure to reset relations with Russia, attempts to lead from behind in Libya and the rise of a "terrorist safe haven" on the Mediterranean Sea to know there is a problem, said Walters.

"He made a dangerous nuclear deal with Iran," said Walters. "He has not done enough to take on ISIS. You add all of this up, and what do you see? All across the world, our enemies don't fear us, and our friends don't trust us."

The president's foreign policy has also left a power vacuum overseas, which rivals are happy to fill, Walters said.

It's not enough for House Republicans to criticize the actions, but instead, the nation's lawmakers must propose an alternative, she continued.

"We developed this plan from the bottom up, hearing from our constituents and working with all the members of our conference, and now we're taking our case to the American people," she said, noting that her constituents have told her they consider national security the issue that concerns them most.

"Our plan includes 67 specific ideas to strengthen our national security," said Walters. "We lay out our four objectives: Keep Americans safe at home, defeat the terrorists, advance America's interests abroad, and renew our national security tools."

The plan also focuses on defeating radical Islamic terrorism, she said, and was written with the understanding that the United States faces threats and more will emerge.

"President Reagan famously called for 'peace through strength,'" said Walters. "That is still the case today. America will be safe only when we are strong, and I believe our plan will accomplish just that."
