Gingrich: Trump's Unpredictable Nature 'Great Strength and Weakness'

President Donald Trump's unpredictability is "great strength and a great weakness," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Friday in response to the president's controversial NBC interview and subsequent tweets.

"One of his strengths is he moves very fast and very aggressively," Gingrich told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" program.

"He is an entrepreneur who gets ahead of his own offensive line so they can't block for him because he is out in front."

However, there are days when that strategy does not "work very well," and the past couple of days, with the firing of FBI Director James Comey and the interview, "has been one of those. It made it harder for him to get across what he is doing, although in the long run I think the country will end up deciding he was right."

Gingrich continued that Trump had "very deep doubts about Comey," and pointed out that many Democrats also wanted Comey to be fired.

"The president, however, waited to get what was in effect a triggering device," said Gingrich. "The note from the new deputy attorney general was the triggering device."

However, Comey wasn't fired by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, whose written recommendation had been widely cited by the president's spokespeople as spurring Comey's firing, until Thursday, when Trump said he'd already planned to let the FBI director go.

"I think what Trump was saying is, 'look, I've had a long period of distrusting this guy. I did not think he was doing a very good job. I thought he had mishandled both the Clinton investigation and the Russian investigation,'" said Gingrich.

"But the moment that they finally fired him did involve having a memo. If you read the entire letter from the deputy attorney general, it is a devastating letter."

Also on Friday, Gingrich commented on a Trump tweet calling for written responses to be handed out to the press, rather than press briefings, for the sake of accuracy.

"The press would hate them," Gingrich said of written briefings. "There is an entire wing of the news media which wakes up in the morning and says 'I know Trump did something horrible. What was it?'"

Trump, said Gingrich, needs to do what he promised.

"If he creates jobs, fixes healthcare, moves forward, the country in the end will reelect him," said the former speaker.

"If he fails on those big things, all this noise is not going to save him. So I think that ultimately the news media is never going to be his friend and that's a fact."
