Newt Gingrich came to Donald Trump's defense over a purported Star of David that appeared in a tweet on Trump's Twitter account.

"I think it is so profoundly dishonest that it sickens me and makes me very angry," Gingrich told CNN. "The media's deliberate distortion. It's absurdity."

Gingrich was referring to the media outcry over an image Trump published on Twitter last weekend. It featured a photo of Hillary Clinton, a six-pointed star with the words "Most Corrupt Candidate Ever!" and a pile of money.

Trump later deleted the tweet and replaced it with an image that had a circle instead of a star. Critics have called the tweet anti-Semitic.

"He has got a son-in-law who's an Orthodox Jew, his daughter has converted to Judaism, grandchildren who are Jewish," Gingrich told CNN. "And he gave a speech at AIPAC (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee) that was pretty definitive. And in the middle of this, you get this kind of smear?"

The image in question was originally posted to Twitter by a user with a history of making racist comments on the micro-blogging site.

Trump said Wednesday he wishes he had left up the original image, saying it was not meant to be racist in any way.
