Gingrich: Comey's Testimony Showed He Is 'Amazingly Political'

FBI Director James Comey showed how "amazingly political" he can be during Monday's House Intelligence Committee hearing, as he could explain "anything that sounds like a sound bite that would hurt" President Donald Trump, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Tuesday.

"Anything which would reflect on the Obama administration's leaking, the Obama administration's ability to break the law, he can't comment on it at all," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox & Friends," while pointing out that "97 percent of the money given to politics by the Justice Department's employees went to [Democratic nominee] Hillary Clinton."

The department, Gingrich continued, is "filled with liberal lawyers who are very eager to destroy the Trump administration."

With Comey, "you have the FBI director saying, 'oh, sure, we're investigating this about Trump. Oh, gee, I can't comment on the clear illegality of committing a felony by releasing American secrets,' which could only have come from people in the Obama administration," said Gingrich. "I mean, nobody else had the secrets."

"Again and again," Gingrich said, Comey tried to "sort of soften it for the Obama people while being quite cheerful" about speaking about the Trump campaign.

And now, the Trump administration will need to be "very careful," and more aggressive legally, as matters can escalate quickly in Washington, said Gingrich.

"The left wants to destroy Trump," said Gingrich. "They had enormous support inside the Justice Department for Hillary Clinton. These are hard line liberals. They want to work in Justice because of their liberal beliefs."

Gingrich said he's seen the same thing happen often, including in the Scooter Libby case, and the situation gets to be "very dangerous" if the Justice Department can find a way to weaken the administration.

"Gradually the left starts to talk, and then the Democratic senators in Congress talk, and then people start saying, 'oh, we need this or we need that or we need the next thing,' and it gets to be very, very dangerous because what happens is they go to the lowest guy on the totem pole and trade up," said Gingrich.

Gingrich also commented on the future of the American Health Care Act, saying he thinks it has a 50-50 chance of passing the House vote set for Thursday.

"My advice as someone who used to do this for a living, you have to figure out an amendment that brings them on board, and you have to get to 216 [votes]," Gingrich said.

"I do not think it is healthy to have the president's first big legislative initiative get stalled out and have to go back and redo it. Whatever they're going to do for a second round, they ought to do right now in the next 48 hours."
