Pataki Airs NH Ad Slamming GOP Focus on Social Issues

By    |   Wednesday, 15 Apr 2015 09:23 AM

Former New York Gov. George Pataki is airing a TV commercial in New Hampshire this week which slams Republicans for focusing too much on social issues at the expense of addressing economic and foreign policy matters, CNN reported.

Pataki does not name any opponents specifically but says that the disproportionate focus on social issues will play into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's hands.

"Defeating Islamic terrorists, shrinking government, growing the economy — these are the issues that matter most," Pataki says in the 30-second ad. "These are the issues that matter most. Instead we're debating social issues like abortion and gay rights. They are a distraction, and will only help elect Hillary."

The ad, which is posted on YouTube, will begin airing later this week and is paid for by "We The People, Not Washington" Super PAC as Pataki considers throwing his hat into the ring for the 2016 race.

A Pataki adviser said the governor sees an opportunity in the Republican field, particularly in New Hampshire, for an economic conservative who is socially moderate and hawkish on foreign policy issues.

"This is the governor's eighth trip to New Hampshire. He has announced a steering committee with two of only 14 state senators, is opening an office in Manchester and will be the first potential 2016er to have hit every county in New Hampshire," the Pataki adviser said, according to CNN.

"His approach is to take advantage of the retail opportunities in New Hampshire to shape a dialogue about the need to shrink the size and scope of Washington."

Pataki considered presidential bids in 2008 and 2012, having left the governorship in 2007 after three terms. He told a New York radio station last month that he is "strongly leaning" toward a run.

CNN said that Pataki's critique of fellow Republicans shows that the 2016 nomination contest will be a battle between social conservatives and moderates.
