Cohn: Tax Reform Process Will Be Inclusive, 'Unlike Healthcare'

Gary Cohn, the director of the National Economic Council, said Friday on Fox Business that the tax reform process will be more open than the drafting of the GOP healthcare plan.

"We're just starting down the path of taxes. And unlike healthcare, we are out talking to all the groups that are going to be interested in our tax plan," Cohn said.

Cohn added that he and Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury secretary, began meeting with groups on tax reform "literally the day after" the White House announced its plan.

"We started holding listening groups. We met with some of the conservative thought leaders," he said. "We've met with the Freedom Caucus. We're continuously going out and meeting with groups. We're going to meet with industry groups. We're going to literally travel around and make sure we understand everyone's concerns with taxes upfront."

House Freedom Caucus member Mark Sanford of South Carolina told Politico Thursday that he has begun to target certain sections of the tax plan approved by GOP leaders. Members of the caucus hope to have a greater impact on tax reform than they did on healthcare.

"Rather than react, then stop something, and then go in fits and starts forward, we can constructively engage at the front end and say this is more of what we believe," he said. "Let's . . . avoid the kind of dislocation that we saw in this particular [health care] bill about a month ago."
