Gang of Eight Sets Tuesday Announcement

By    |   Thursday, 11 Apr 2013 11:53 PM

Now that its member-level negotiations are done, the Senate Gang of Eight plans to spend the next few days revisiting its wide-ranging immigration legislation in preparation for an announcement early next week, reports Politico.

The wrap-up of the months-long talks basically gives immigration reform the green light to move forward in the Senate.

“All issues that rise to the member level have been dealt with,” Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., a leader of the Gang of Eight, said in a statement.

“All that’s left is the drafting.”

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., another member of the group, said Tuesday is the target date for an announcement.

The group is now getting ready to move on from closed-door negotiations to the job of selling the bill in public, which won’t be easy.

They will attempt to hold together a tenuous coalition of labor, business, conservatives and liberals through a Judiciary Committee markup and a long debate in the Senate.
