Leaders of the conservative House Freedom Caucus said Wednesday that they will take steps to force fellow Republicans to vote for a straight repeal of Obamacare.

"There's no reason we should put anything less on President [Donald] Trump's desk than we put on Obama's," Freedom Caucus Chairman Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina, told Politico.

"President Trump wants to sign repeal," he said. "It's time Congress send it to him."

The objective is to use a parliamentary move called a "discharge petition" to begin the process that would send a version of the 2015 bill repealing the Affordable Care Act, vetoed by President Barack Obama, to Trump as early as September.

Meadows and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan were expected to file a special rule late Wednesday to consider the repeal proposal, they told Politico.

Under House rules, the request would sit in the Rules Committee for at least seven business days.

Then, the legislators can file the discharge petition, according to the report. It would require signatures from at least half the House, 218 members, to bring the repeal to the floor.

Meadows and Jordan told Politico that the move would immediately identify which Republicans rescinded their support for the 2015 repeal bill.

The House narrowly passed its version of the healthcare bill in May, only to see efforts falter in the Senate.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday that the chamber will vote next week to bring the latest version – an outright repeal with a replacement plan developed over two years – to the floor for debate.

However, President Donald Trump earlier told senators to work on "repeal and replace," saying they should not begin their summer recess without passing a bill.

"I don't think we should leave town unless we have a health insurance plan, unless we can give our people great healthcare," Trump told reporters at the start of a luncheon with GOP senators.

"We're in this room today to deliver our promise to the American people, to repeal Obamacare and to ensure that they have the health care they need.

"We can repeal it, but the best is repeal and replace."
