Rep. Kinzinger: Trump Talks Soft, Acts 'Very Strong' on Russia

CNN's "New Day"

President Donald Trump's policies on Russia have been praiseworthy, even if his words have not, according to Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill.

"His policies have been very good, the words haven’t necessarily," Kinzinger said Friday on CNN's "New Day."

"This president doesn't talk very strong on Russia, but he acts very strong on Russia," Kinzinger said, mentioning the bombing of a Syrian airfield in April and the shooting down of a Syrian fighter jet.

Kinzinger contrasted Trump's actions to former president Barack Obama's.

"[Obama] said very tough things about Russia in the last years of his presidency, but didn't do anything tough," Kinzinger said.

Addressing Russia's hacking of elections is "extremely essential" for the president and Republicans, Kinzinger said.

"Admit that Russia is a real problem," Kinzinger advised. "Admit that interfering in, whether it's on or against you, whether it's the French election for (French president Emmanuel) Macron or somebody else, it doesn't matter. The fact is it undermines our very foundation of democracy, and we can't have that.

"Today's thing that may benefit your party or may benefit you is tomorrow's thing that benefits your opponent. We just can't have any of it. So, admitting it is the first step to defeating it, exposing it, too."

The congressman also appeared Friday on Fox News, discussing North Korea.

Story continues below video.

China must be forced to engage in taking on North Korea, he said.

"We tried to do that with a carrot, it's not working," Kinzinger said. "So there's going to have to be a stick. I think, ultimately, there's going to have to be sanctions against Chinese companies that do business with North Korea."
