Ray Flynn Urges Formation of Catholic Political Movement

Former Vatican Ambassador Raymond Flynn is calling for a new Catholic political movement to emerge in the United States in response to the partisan politics he says has led to a "dysfunctional" government.

Speaking on a five-city tour through northern California, the three-time Boston mayor and well-known author, said Catholics feel disenfranchised and think powerful secular groups wield too much power and influence in American politics, reports the Catholic Business Journal.

"It is only a matter of time before Catholic voters say they have had enough of dysfunctional and unrepresentative government," he said, adding, "and divisive politics."

Flynn continued, "[We need] lay Catholic leaders committed to expressing this Catholic voice to emerge, and to unite this divided country."

The former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican reportedly got a standing ovation at every stop he made in the greater San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento, where he addressed several Catholic professional and business groups.

After leaving the Bay Area, Flynn remarked that he was overwhelmed by the positive response. "Clearly," he said, "the support and enthusiasm are there."
