Florida Moves to 'Winner Take All' GOP Primary

By    |   Saturday, 16 May 2015 07:17 PM

The winner of Florida's 2016 Republican primary next March will take all of the state's 99 delegates to the GOP National Convention in July, under new rules approved Saturday by state party officials.

The delegates had been awarded proportionally in the past, the Tampa Bay Times reports. The Sunshine State's primary is March 15.

"With Florida’s immense size and diverse population, any campaign that can mount a successful state-wide effort in Florida will be well positioned to run a truly national campaign come 2016," state Republican Party Chairman Blaise Ingoglia told the Times. "Florida will now be the first winner-take-all primary in the country.

"This ensures that all presidential campaigns will have to spend a considerable amount of time in Florida speaking to Republicans, from Pensacola to Key West and everywhere in-between."

First-term Florida Sen. Marco Rubio announced his candidacy last month, while former Gov. Jeb Bush has yet to officially say whether he is running for the White House.

The Republican convention will be held July 18-21, 2016, in Cleveland.

Ingoglia told the Times that the party intended to work harder than ever to deliver the state's crucial 29 electoral votes to the Republican nominee.

"The Democrat Party believes that they are Ready for Hillary, but I can promise them that they won’t be nearly as ready as we will," he told the Times. "Through the launch of Project 29, we are laying out our goals and strategy to deliver Florida’s 29 electoral votes to the Republican nominee for president.

"We are gearing up to do more than we have ever done before," Ingoglia said. "From being embedded early on in all communities to building up the technology infrastructure needed for digital outreach, our party will be ready to play a key role on the national stage."
