Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has maintained a sizable lead over Donald Trump in California — a heavily Democratic state — and now, a new Field Poll released Thursday shows that Clinton has expanded that lead by 30 percentage points in a head-to-head matchup.

According to the poll:
  • Clinton: 58 percent;
  • Trump: 28 percent;
  • Undecided: 14 percent.
When Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson is added into the race, Clinton maintains a huge lead, but loses 8 points to Johnson, while Trump loses 2:

  • Clinton: 50 percent;
  • Trump: 26 percent;
  • Gary Johnson: 10 percent;
  • Undecided: 14 percent.

According to the Sacramento Bee, California presents a large challenge for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee who is not only losing to Clinton, but also to voters of all ages, ethnicities and education levels.

Although Trump insists that he can compete with Clinton in the Golden State, no Republican candidate has carried California since George H.W. Bush in 1988.

"I think Trump supporters in California appear to be pretty hard-core supporters," said Mark DiCamillo, director of the poll. "But they're down to a relatively small number, and that's really his problem."

In terms of favorability:
  • Clinton, 53 percent hold a favorable view;
  • Trump, 24 percent hold a favorable view.
When it comes to a matchup between Clinton and her Democratic rival Bernie Sanders, 72 percent of Democratic voters are satisfied with Clinton becoming the nominee for the party.

And, 53 percent of Democratic voters in California are ready for Sanders to suspend his campaign and support Clinton.

"I think they see that Clinton is going to be the nominee now, and they want to get on with it," DiCamillo said.
