Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, R-Calif., took a swipe at President Donald Trump on Wednesday, accusing him of attempting to cut the federal budget at the expense of some of America's most vulnerable.

"President Trump promised us he wants to 'make America great again,'" Schwarzenegger said at the National After-School Summit. "That's not how you make America great, by taking $1.2 billion from the children and robbing them blind."

The former GOP governor made his comments at the University of Southern California's Schwarzenegger Institute, CNN reported.

"Why would he do that?" Schwarzenegger asked, referring to Trump's proposal to cut the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant program, which serves low-income children in after-school and summer programs. "Why would he want to balance the budget on the backs of those kids?

"When I look at you, I see a bunch of warriors," he continued. "We're going to go to Washington, and we're not going to take this lying down."

Schwarzenegger said "Everyone that is smart knows . . . that for every dollar you spend in an after-school program, you save $3-6 down the line," Politico reported.

The programs provide children with vital social, cultural, and artistic advancement and help improve their physical fitness, said Schwarzenegger, who has been an advocate for the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and the Special Olympics.

Schwarzenegger and Trump have sparred on Twitter recently, especially after the action movie star took over for the billionaire businessman as host of the television show "Celebrity Apprentice" after the latter's successful run for the Oval Office.

"I am a person who does not like to sit in front of the television and complain," said Schwarzenegger in an apparent dig at Trump's propensity to watch TV news, then tweet about it. "Is better to go and have a solution — and do something about it.'"

Trump budget director Mick Mulvaney has justified the cuts to the education programs, saying, "there's no demonstrable evidence they're actually helping results, helping kids do better at school."
