Swalwell: Nunes Must Leave Probe, Set Up Independent Group

House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes should leave the investigation into the Trump campaign's possible ties with Russia and an independent commission set up instead after he allegedly coordinated the probe with the White House, Rep. Eric Swalwell told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Tuesday.

"This is what a cover-up to a crime looks like. We are watching it play out right now," said Swalwell, who is also a member of the House Intelligence Committee.

When asked what his Republican colleagues are saying, the Democrat said that many of them are frustrated, because they "have said that we don't need an independent commission because we're doing the work in the House committee, on the intelligence committee, and so that's always been the out for not having an independent commission. So I've heard frustration that they don't have that out anymore."

Nunes denies that his announcement last week that officials from the Trump transition team had been inadvertently surveilled by the U.S. intelligence community came at the request of the White House, even though he went there the day before he made his announcement to meet his unnamed source.

Swalwell ridiculed Nunes' claim that the White House merely was a secure location for reviewing classified information and that people in the West Wing didn't even know he was there.

Swalwell said that the White House is "not an internet cafe. You can't just walk in and receive classified information" and that by the required procedure of a Congressman visiting there, "everyone in the building knows that you're there in the building."

The congressman added that there is, in any case no reason to go to the White House to view classified materials, because there are secure areas for doing so at the Capital, insisting that "If this was done the proper way, they could have brought it over, shared it with both parties of the committee."

Swalwell said that committee members have "always been on the same team up until now," but now Nunes' unwillingness to share the source of his information has betrayed that concept.
