Rasmussen: Almost Half Thought Eric Holder Chose Politics Over Justice

Almost half of all Americans believe Attorney General Eric Holder acted out of political interest, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll released today.

Asked whether Holder administered "justice in a fair way, or was he more interested in politics," 47 percent said the nation's first African-American attorney general was more interested in politics. Only 28 percent thought he was fair and one-quarter of respondents said they were not sure.

There was also a division between voters in terms of his performance as attorney general with 32 percent giving Holder a good or excellent rating, compared with 30 percent who rated it "poor."

The divide among political views reflected his controversial tenure. Almost 60 percent of Democrats supported Holder, but only 11 percent of Republicans and 24 percent of non-affiliated voters held a favorable opinion.

The results are in line with an August Rasmussen poll which found 54 percent had an unfavorable opinion of the Justice Department under Holder's leadership.

The poll was taken shortly after Holder announced the department would launch an investigation into the police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

As President Barack Obama considers the kind of individual he will choose to lead the Justice Department, 46 percent express hope that he will be "less like" Holder.

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on September 27-28, 2014 by Rasmussen Reports.

Over one-third of women voters and of those under 40 have no opinion of Holder.

The poll also found a split between the parties about how the U.S. Constitution should be interpreted.

Among Democrats, 73 percent view it as a living document, while 59 percent of Republicans favor strict interpretation. Unaffiliated voters prefer strict interpretation by a narrow 48 percent to 44 percent margin.
