President Donald Trump's plan to slash the Environmental Protection Agency budget could affect programs that protect kids from lead paint, The Washington Post reported.

The EPA has been asked to cut one-third of its $8.267 billion budget – and eliminating the two programs, which focus on training workers in the safe removal of lead-based paint and public education about its risks, would cut $16.61 million along with 70 employees.

The EPA has proposed shifting many federal responsibilities to states, with this move falling in line. Jim Jones, who ran the chemical safety unit at the EPA for five years, told the Post that plan likely will not work.

"The basis for the EPA reduction is that states can do this work, but then we're going to take away the money we're going to give to states," he said. "I think it's just one of many examples in that budget of the circular thinking there that just doesn't hold together."

Thirty-six states rely on the federal government to provide training on how to properly handle renovations involving lead paint. Fred Ulreich, the chief executive of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry, said in a statement his group "believes that the program can be better run and enforcement can be more vigorous the closer it is to the local contractors."
