Sen. Elizabeth Warren: Fighting Trump Now, Not Waiting for 2020 Race

It's more important to fight back against President Donald Trump's actions and policies than to wait for a presidential run to handle him four years from now, Sen. Elizabeth Warren said Wednesday, while sidestepping questions over whether she's planning to mount a campaign.

"I'm worried about what Donald Trump is going to do between right now and the time I go to bed tonight," the Massachusetts Democrat told MSBNC's "Morning Joe" during a wide-ranging interview.

"I'm worried about what he's going to do between the time I go to bed tonight and the time I wake up tomorrow morning. What will he do at 3 a.m. on Twitter?"

Show co-host Willie Geist continued to push Warren for an answer, but she replied that she's up for reelection in 2018 to her Senate seat, and she's "all in on that," in addition to fighting back against Trump.

"We have to be in this fight urgently right now," Warren said. "I totally get why people want to talk about 2020 and what are we going to do, but that's way down the line."

She continued that she's not only concerned about what Trump says, but what he does.

"Donald Trump has barely completed 100 days and it's not just what he says, it's the things he is doing to working people," Warren said.

"That he's making it okay for, easier for corporations that kill and maim their employees to hide that fact, making it easier for federal contractors to steal employees' wages, making it easier for investment advisors to cheat retirees. We've got to stay on what Donald Trump, not what he says, what Donald Trump is doing right now."

Geist argued, though, that it's "not a 2020 parlor game for a lot of people," and many believe that Warren would be the candidate who could stop Trump in the next election.

"Willie, what we have to do is we can't wait for four years to stop Donald Trump," Warren said. "It's an important point. Democracy works if we engage in the fights right now. The reason that the Republicans and Donald Trump have not replaced Obamacare with Trumpcare is because people around this country have gotten engaged.

"Engagement is critical and it's engagement not in a distant election, it's engagement in today's fight. That's what we've got to keep our focus on and, boy, you better believe I am in that fight all the way."

Warren said she is also concerned about what show co-host Mika Brzezinski called Trump's "really incoherent statements and disturbing statements," but she's trying to "stay focused."

"What is he advancing?" she said. "It's not just about what Donald Trump is saying and doing, it's the Republicans in the House and the Senate and what together they are doing to this country.

"Yeah, I worry a lot about Donald Trump, I really worry about Donald Trump, but I worry about all of the levers of government right now because the Republicans control all of them. If House and Senate Republicans were willing to act as a check on Donald Trump, we would be in a different world."

Warren also weighed in on former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's comments blaming FBI Director James Comey and WikiLeaks for her loss to Trump, saying that she believes "it's clear that we didn't get out there and make the case as strongly as we should, not just that we will fight for working people but that we are fighting for working people. That's what we've got to do."

And as a party, she continued, Democrats need to get out and fight for a progressive agenda, which is "America's agenda."

"We need to show what it is we're fighting for, why we're fighting and that we really are committed to making a change to make Washington once again not just work for the top 10 percent, to make Washington once again work for everybody else," said Warren.
