In response to a claim that President Donald Trump told two Russian officials former FBI director James Comey was putting pressure on him, a leading House Democrat wants to see records of the conversation.

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., responded to a report that suggested Trump called Comey a "nut job" who was putting "great pressure" on him because of the Russia investigation through a statement from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

"This new report that President Trump openly admitted to the Russians that he 'faced great pressure' from the FBI's criminal investigation that was 'taken off' when he fired Director Comey is astonishing — and extremely troubling," said Cummings, the committee's ranking member.

"If these White House documents in fact exist memorializing the President's statements to the Russians, the Oversight Committee needs to obtain copies immediately."

Cummings then called on committee chairman Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, to request documents from the White House that purportedly contain what was discussed during an Oval Office meeting last week between Trump and two Russians: foreign minister Sergey Lavrov and ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

"Chairman Chaffetz should request these White House documents today and have his subpoena pen ready — just as he did earlier this week with the memos written by Director Comey," Cummings wrote.
