Donald Trump stuck to his nature of counterpunching against all critics when he blasted a well-known theologian Monday who had compared his presidential run to "reality television moral sewage."

Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, said Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation," that "What we have in the Donald Trump phenomenon … is an embrace of the very kind of moral and cultural decadence that conservatives have been saying for a long time is the problem."

Many evangelical Christians have voiced support for Trump, but Moore said, "conservatives who previously said we have too much awful cultural rot on television now want to put it on C-Span for the next four years …with either [Trump or Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton]. That isn't what we believe in."

Trump took Moore to task via his favorite social media outlet, Twitter:

Moore responded first in Trump's own style:

Followed by a Biblical reference:

That passage reads: "When [King Ahab] saw Elijah, he said to him, 'Is that you, you troubler of Israel? 'I have not made trouble for Israel,' Elijah replied. 'But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the Lord's commands and have followed the Baals."

Appearing Monday night on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360," Moore said Trump's insult of him was one of the few things the brash businessman has said that he actually agrees with.

"I am a nasty guy with no heart," Moore said. "We sing worse things about ourselves in our hymns on Sunday mornings. We're a wretch in need of God's grace. …. That's the reason why I need forgiveness from God through Jesus Christ."
