Despite President Donald Trump's bellicose rhetoric that Barack Obama's strategy against North Korea was a "total failure," his administration has basically adopted the former president's policy in its confrontation with Pyongyang, Politico reported Tuesday.

Even with Trump's vow for a "very severe" response to North Korea's continuing testing and development of nuclear weapons and missiles, his administration has utilized a strategy very similar to Obama's.

Veteran intelligence agent Bruce Klingner told Politico that administration officials are saying privately that a preventive military attack is "not on the table." They instead are relying on an Obama-type policy that concentrates on increasing pressure on both Pyongyang and those nations who aid the country in its weapons programs, while also boosting military readiness and capabilities and expressing the possibility of diplomatic talks if North Korea leader Kim Jong-un agrees with the principle that he must give up his country's nuclear program.

"The Trump administration to date has not yet distinguished its policy toward North Korea from that of Obama," Klingner said. "The president and others have been talking tough about sanctions, as Obama did, but have not yet followed through on any significant increase."

Trump's harsh criticism of the Obama administration as not tough enough against Pyongyang has now evolved into Secretary of State Rex Tillerson soothing words last week that "We do not seek a regime change, we do not seek a collapse of the regime, we do not seek an accelerated reunification of the peninsula, we do not seek an excuse to send our military north of the 38th Parallel," The Washington Post reported.

It was those words, according to the Post, that enabled China and Russia to support the sanctions resolution at the United Nations over the weekend in an international partnership that Obama also cultivated.

In any case, Politico reported most experts believe that more of the same strategy is the best path to a situation that has no magic solution and that taking military action will not bring the desired result.
