Conservative blogger Erick Erickson called Indiana Gov. Mike Pence "the perfect vice presidential pick for Donald Trump," though it wasn't intended as a compliment.

"He lacks the courage of his convictions and would absolutely not overshadow Donald Trump. He gives Trump the veneer of conservatism without anyone ever having to worry that he'd actually fight for those principles," Erickson wrote on The Resurgent website

Pence is a former congressman and former chairman of the House Republican Conference, which is responsible for distributing the GOP's message to members in the lower legislative chamber. In 2008 and 2012, he was frequently mentioned as a possible candidate for president. Recently, The Washington Times reported a "95 percent chance" that Pence would be chosen as Trump's running-mate.

"Pence has time and time again shied away from any fight in which he was not sure of the outcome before going into it," Erickson wrote. "Since he got in the House of Representatives, the one thing Pence ran for that he was not assured of was minority leader and he did a terrible job campaigning for it, losing to John Boehner 168-27. But then he got House Republican Conference chairman and faded from the fights over conservative convictions."

Erickson also called out Pence for flip-flopping on religious liberties as governor of Indiana, claiming "Christian evangelicals, in particular, were disheartened that Pence threw them under the bus."

The pundit went on to condemn Pence for lacking "the courage of his convictions," saying that "Pence folded like a cheap suit" when confronted with what Erickson called "the gay mafia and press."

Pence "checks all the boxes" for Erickson, who in bullet points illustrated how Pence "is perceived as a conservative, but won't actually fight for conservatism... as an evangelical, but won't actually fight for evangelicals... as a successful governor, but most likely cannot even win re-election."

Erickson cites CNN commentator and The Daily Caller writer Matt Lewis, who in an article Monday said, "Pence has done little to enhance his stature with conservatives," since 2013, and noted that "if Donald Trump thinks that picking Pence will be a panacea for his general election base problems, he might be in for a letdown."
