Sen. Ben Cardin: Trump Insulting Mexico and Rewarding Russia

President Donald Trump's recent actions and comments on immigration, along with his stance on Russia, are increasingly dangerous for the U.S. according to Sen. Ben Cardin.

"Well, within the last 24 hours, it's been [Trump's] comments about Mexico," the Maryland Democrat said on MSNBC Friday. "Mexico is a very important country. We need Mexico for immigration policies to work in our country. We need Mexico to stop illegal trafficking of drugs.

"The putting up this wall will not help in regards to immigration. His proposals to pay for it will hurt working families in the United States and hurt our economy. It's just dangerous what he is suggesting in regards to our southern friend."

A meeting between Trump and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto planned for next week was cancelled on Thursday, due to both parties' continued public disagreement over Trump's proposed wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

"Less than one week after taking office, President Trump is already causing serious damage to one of our most important relationships in the world," Cardin said in a statement after the meeting was cancelled, according to ABC News local affiliate 47 ABC in Maryland.

"President Trump's divisive rhetoric and antagonistic policies are undermining our deepest values," he added. "His intention to waste billions of taxpayer dollars on a costly border wall that won't work is misguided and only weakens our standing in the world."

Cardin, who is the ranking member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, also decried Trump's attitude towards Russia.

The senator said "it's very interesting" that Trump "doesn't have nice things to say" about Mexico, which is one of "our traditional allies."

"But a country that attacked us, Russia, that attacked our free election system, now we are talking about easing up sanctions where they have invaded Ukraine? We are concerned that when you reward that type of conduct, all you're going to see is further Russian aggression. This really concerns all of us."

Trump's nominee for secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, "was not strong at all in regards to maintaining or strengthening sanctions against Russia," Cardin said, likely referring to the Exxon Mobil CEO's recent confirmation hearing in front of the Foreign Relations Committee.

"These are concerns that we have. Mr. Tillerson has done a lot of business with Russia. We concerned that he is going to be more interested in the business relationships than promoting American values."

Cardin said Monday on CNN that he does not support Tillerson for secretary of State, just hours before the committee was scheduled to vote on his confirmation.
