A debate victory for Donald Trump will be showing voters "he's ready to be president and commander in chief on day one," campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said Sunday – adding the GOP nominee is "a brilliant debater."

In an interview with ABC News' "This Week," Conway said the Clinton campaign is "worried about a lot of things" in advance of the first presidential debate Monday, including the Democratic presidential nominee is "just not a very good candidate."

"A victory for Donald Trump tomorrow night is answering the questions and showing America that he's ready to be president and commander in chief on day one," she said, adding she hoped "this debate tomorrow night will be about substantive issues."

Conway said she expects Team Clinton is concerned about the debate because it is "really afraid that Hillary Clinton is just not a very good candidate."

"I think they're worried about many things," she added. "Hillary Clinton should have been in the much better position. She's not known for her abundance of self-awareness or being nimble or resilient. They never saw Barack Obama coming in 2008. They never took Bernie Sanders seriously earlier this year . . . And they certainly never anticipated the Trump comeback . . . "

"He's a brilliant debater," she added of the GOP nominee. "He's like the Babe Ruth of debating. He really shows up and swings and does a great job."

She also defended Trump against criticism from President Barack Obama about Trump's remarks the black community was in the worse shape it's "ever, ever, ever" been.

"I really applaud Donald Trump for having this conversation in and about the inner cities," she said. "I appreciate the fact that President Obama has his perspective. But I think Donald Trump should also be applauded for actually trying to make a difference in these communities."
