It has been a contentious presidential election year on both sides of the aisle, and the front-runners of both major parties face trouble within their own ranks even if they secure their nominations, according to a new USA Today/Suffolk University Poll.

Four in 10 Republicans told the poll they are not certain they would vote for Trump if he gets the party nod. Likewise, 4 in 10 Democrats who support Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders say they aren't sure they'll vote for Clinton – and 13 percent of them say they'd consider voting for Trump over Clinton.

Both Democrats and Republicans were split down the middle over whether they would feel their candidate's loss of the nomination would be a result of a fair process or a rigged system.

Both Trump and Sanders have complained in campaign events that the system is not fair.

The poll talked to 1,000 likely voters Wednesday through Sunday and has an overall margin of error of plus-or-minus 3 percentage points. The margin of error for the 363 Democratic voters is plus or minus 5.1 points and for the 292 likely Republican voters, plus-or-minus 5.7 points.
