Donald Trump has made many promises to give to charity over the years, but there is little indication that he actually follows through and makes good on the pledges in most cases, The Washington Post reports.

The newspaper said all the promises Trump has made for donations over the past 15 years adds up to more than $9.5 million, but despite an exhaustive search attempt to verify that the money was indeed given, there is only evidence for him donating $3.8 million, including $1 million to a veterans group in May.

Although this is not a small sum, it is not very high compared to other billionaires, who are known to donate significantly more, the Post reports.

Trump and his staff insists that he has given away vast sums of money, but his campaign refuses to provide details and he won't release his tax returns, which would also prove the donations.

His staff insists that he purposely keeps his donations quiet so that other charities won't constantly bother him for money.

Politico, however, reports that if Trump's claims that some of his commercial dealings benefit charity are found to be untrue, he could be breaking the law, which forbids deceptive business practices.

In addition to failing to make good on his pledges, The Daily Beast reports that The Trump Foundation, the candidate's non-profit organization, is accused of violating rules that do not allow it to engage in politics, because his campaign work and Foundation activities have often overlapped.
