The Democratic National Committee (DNC) took a dramatic swipe at Donald Trump on Wednesday, accusing the nation's new president of using taxpayer dollars to fund a phony voter fraud investigation, which it says is like probing whether "Bigfoot" is real.

"Everyone knows there was no massive voter fraud in the election — even President Trump's own legal team admitted it in court," the DNC said in a statement.

"But he can't let go of his voter fraud fantasy — both because he cannot bear the thought that millions more Americans voted for Hillary Clinton than for him, and to cover up the real crime: Russian efforts to help him win.

"While he's throwing away taxpayer dollars looking for millions of phantom voters, Trump might as well investigate the whereabouts of Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster too," the DNC said referring to the fictitious missing link and legendary Scottish water beast.

On Twitter, Trump called for a "major investigation into voter fraud" to "strengthen up voting procedures."

The billionaire real-estate tycoon, who won the 2016 presidential election through a majority of electoral votes, believes millions of illegal votes were cast, robbing him of being declared winner of the popular vote.

The DNC said Trump should skip the investigation and help look into U.S. intelligence claims that Russia — spearheaded by its president Vladimir Putin, whom Trump has appeared friendly with — tried to influence the election.

"If he's interested in doing his new job as our President, he should protect our nation by cooperating with Congress and the Intelligence Community investigations into Russia's attack on our elections and his team's potential collusion with them," the DNC said.
