Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez and Deputy Chairman Keith Ellison will kick off a multi-state tour on Friday aimed at turning the party around, The Hill is reporting.

Over the next two weeks the top DNC officials will visit Michigan, New Jersey. Texas and Virginia, according to the website.

"This will be them talking about the need to get back to basics," a DNC official told The Hill. "We need to invest in local organizing, listen to states and make sure we are doing what's best for them, because they know their states and their races best. … There are opportunities if we invest in these states.

"And we'll be talking directly to voters about what the party stands for, (including) a message of economic opportunity — whether it's the way 'TrumpCare' will impact the pocketbooks of workers or how the policies of the Trump administration will hurt workers."

And Perez, who was just recently elected chairman, said the party needs to get back to organizing on the state level.

"We need to redefine the mission of the Democratic Party so that we are not only electing the president, but we're electing candidates up and down the ballot, from the school board to the Senate," he said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

"And the best way to do that is to ensure that we have a robust presence in all the states and territories."

The Hill noted the DNC is hoping the tour will "send the signal that the party is committed to local investment."

"They are going to states they should have won to tell them 'we get it, we understand what went wrong and are going to change.' They are going to states where it is critical where we have a strong organization, given these gubernatorial races," Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa told The Hill.
