Sen. Durbin on Sessions: Trump 'Chopping His Head Off'

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., slammed President Donald Trump for his attacks on Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

"Jeff Sessions stuck his neck out for this president, the only, the first senator to endorse him. And now look what the president is doing to him, chopping his head off," Durbin said Wednesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Durbin, the Senate minority whip, said some Republicans have told him privately that Trump's actions have upset them.

"The most conservative Republican senators I have spoken to in private are disgusted by this. They cannot believe that a man, who gave up his Senate career to be a top official in this administration, is being treated in such a shabby way," Durbin said.

Trump is going after Sessions because "he's trying to put an end to this Russian investigation," Durbin said.

Loyalty is the key in politics, according to Durbin in the interview.

"If you're not loyal to your friends, if you don't stick with them through thick and thin, you don't last very long around here. Your word is no good," he said.

The senator said it would be difficult for Trump to find a replacement for Sessions if he fired the attorney general.

"Who would take that job? Honest to goodness, after what he's done to Sessions," Durbin asked during the MSNBC interview.

The senator also discussed the issue Tuesday on MSNBC's "The Beat."

"What the president's doing is brutal. How would you like to be working for a man who is trying to hound you publicly into resigning? What kind of loyalty does that inspire?" Durbin said.
