Education Secretary Betsy DeVos wishes she had answered some questions differently during her confirmation hearing, though she wouldn't change much.

DeVos told Axios that she thought she should have worded her answers to two questions differently. When she was asked if guns should be allowed in schools, she said "there's probably a gun in [a Wyoming] school to protect from potential grizzlies."

"It was a valid illustration," she told Axios. "It just probably wasn't the best illustration I could have given."

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., asked DeVos if all K-12 schools that receive federal funding should be required to follow the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. At the time, she said: "I think that is a matter that's best left to the states," and is "certainly worth discussion."

Now, she wishes she'd said "absolutely. Absolutely ... I have so much compassion for families who have to avail themselves of that law."

In the interview, DeVos also mentioned that she plans to reduce the role of the federal government in education.

"There's clearly an opportunity to slim down the department in some ways," she said. "I don't know if that will ultimately significantly reduce the overall expenditure, but it may, it may help incentivize states in other ways."

"It would be fine with me to have myself worked out of a job, but I'm not sure that — I'm not sure that there will be a champion movement in Congress to do that."

The conservative Council for National Policy released a report Wednesday calling on the Trump administration to promote "historic Judeo-Christian principles" in education, according to The Washington Post.

The council has some connection to DeVos: her mother sits on the board of governors and her father-in-law was the president of the council twice.
