Democrats are facing a dilemma over how far to go in exploiting President-elect Donald Trump's troubles with Russia, Politico reports.

The party is saying that Trump must prove himself as president by backing more sanctions against Russia instead of slamming U.S. intelligence agencies and praising Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump said Wednesday he believed Russia was behind the hacks that attempted to help him get elected, amid reports that Russia could have compromising information about the president-elect. He denied those reports during a press conference.

"It casts a shadow over the presidency," said Sen. Jeff Merkley, a Democrat. "There is no mandate for Trump's vision or policies for America. He lost the popular vote — that's the citizens' vote — by a huge margin."

Politico notes House Democrats appear more open than those in the Senate to saying that Trump's win is tainted due to the Russian meddling.

Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia said he would like to ask Trump directly about his friendship with Russia.

"What is the nature of your compulsion to deny and to avoid this conversation?" he asked, according to Politico. "You put yourself at great peril depending on subsequent facts," he added, in a warning to Republicans.

"This was the most un-American election ever," said Rep. Steve Cohen. "I think people would feel comfortable that he would put America first. It would maybe limit people's concerns that there was a relationship with Russia that was unhealthy that we don't know about. People think Putin has something on him."

Democrats are aiming for an independent panel to look into Russia's meddling after the revelation that U.S. intelligence officials briefed Trump on Russia's attempts to gather damaging information about him, Politico reports.

Norman Solomon, the co-founder of the activist group RootsAction.org wrote an opinion piece in The Hill Monday saying Democrats who demonize the Russian government are risking another military confrontation with Russia.

"This approach is already under way. It is worse than irresponsible," Solomon said.
