Some Georgia Democrats are pushing for former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates to run for governor in 2018, The Hill is reporting.

Yates is a Georgia native who worked in the Justice Department for 27 years before President Donald Trump fired her in January.

"Sally Yates' calm and strong demeanor showed me she could be a great governor of Georgia… her bold resistance, and how she stood up to a president who ordered her to do something unlawful and unconstitutional, has catapulted her profile," said Tharon Johnson, a Georgia Democratic strategist, The Hill reports.

Her testimony on Monday about the Justice Department's investigation into ties between Trump's team and Russia show her as a vital force in the "resistance," said Tharon, who was also a campaign aide to Barack Obama.

"She will have to give Georgians a really good reason why she's not considering running for a constitutional office in 2018," Tharon said, according to The Hill.

Yates has not publicly said she is interested in running for office.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said he hopes Yates will run, but had not spoken to her about running, according to a March report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"I think Sally Yates is special. I think there's a great deal of affection for her in America right now," Reed said, the Journal-Constitution reports.

Her testimony "strengthens her candidacy," one Georgia Democrat told The Hill. "The fact that she's dealing with issues at a very high level, the fact that she's gone toe-to-toe with some of the leading folks on the national stage. She can bring that gravitas to the local stage."

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal, a Republican, cannot run again in 2018 due to term limits. The Hill notes any Democrat faces long odds in Georgia — the state has not elected a Democratic governor since 2003, and Trump won the state in the November election.

Democrats have been pushing Yates to run for a number of months. In February, State Sen. Elena Parent called Yates "a symbol of the anti-Trump resistance sweeping this country," according to Politico.
