Debbie Wasserman Schultz's embattled tenure as head of the Democratic National Committee is in jeopardy, as lawmakers mull whether the divisive Florida lawmaker should be replaced before the July convention to help unify the party, The Hill reports.

"There have been a lot of meetings over the past 48 hours about what color plate do we deliver Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s head on," an unnamed Democratic senator backing Hillary Clinton tells The Hill, adding about a dozen lawmakers are in talks both on the Senate floor and privately.

"I don’t see how she can continue to the election. How can she open the convention? [Vermont Sen. Bernie] Sanders supporters would go nuts."

Wasserman Schultz's relationship has deteriorated with Sanders and his supporters in the wake of accusations she's tipped the scales in favor of Clinton.

According to The Hill, a final decision on the DNC chairwoman's future won’t be made until Clinton and Sanders negotiate a deal to bring the party together for the general election fight – talks in which President Barack Obama is expected to play a big role.

"There's a strong sentiment that the current situation is untenable and can only be fixed by her leaving," an unnamed senior Senate Democratic aide tells The Hill. "There's too much water under the bridge for her to be a neutral arbiter."

But the sentiment to elect a new chairman isn't unanimous.

"I think Debbie Wasserman Schultz has done a good job," Maryland Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski tells The Hill. "If you look at her platform committee appointments, she really gave a lot of room to Bernie supporters."

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi also dismissed an ouster.

"DNC Chairwoman Wasserman Schultz enjoys the support of members of the House Democratic Caucus for her leadership in unifying the party and winning in November," she said in a statement, The Hill reports.

But a Democratic strategist tells The Hill a new chairman might be just what's needed to unify the Sanders and Clinton camps.

"I think that would help the Hillary campaign. That would be a symbol to the Bernie people that Hillary is hearing them," the strategist tells The Hill.
