House Speaker Paul Ryan on Thursday described as "very realistic" a 20 percent tax rate, though news reports have indicated that the rate could be higher.

"That's the plan that we put in the House, and there are other ways of getting to that rate than just the House blueprint plan," the Wisconsin Republican told reporters at a New Balance factory in Lawrence, Mass.

Ryan's comments were reported by The Hill.

Last year, the 2012 vice presidential candidate released a tax reform plan seeking to cut the rate from 35 percent to 20 percent, according to the report.

But in April, the White House released its proposal, calling for a 15 percent rate.

Politico, however, reported Tuesday the Trump administration was now considering a rate of 20 to 25 percent.

"Our tax-writers are running their numbers to look at how can we get these rates as low as possible," Ryan said. "And there are various ways of doing that."

He added congressional committees will draft the actual tax legislation once a unified plan is reached by the House, Senate and White House, The Hill reported.

"We're very, very well on our way," he said.
