Conway: 4 Remain in Trump's 'Narrowed-Down' Secretary of State List

("CBS This Morning")

Former CIA Director David Petraeus, Sen. Bob Corker, Mitt Romney, and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani remain the "narrowed-down" choices for secretary of state, President-elect Donald Trump's senior adviser Kellyanne Conway told one network on Friday, while not commenting to another network on reports Giuliani had been told he is no longer on the list.

"I won't divulge private conversations that haven't been made public, but I will tell you that decision has not been made by the president-elect," Conway told "CBS This Morning" co-anchor Gayle King.

"He will make that ultimate decision as to secretary of state. It's a very important decision, as are off the senior posts and senior staff appointments."

However, Conway told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" that Giuliani remains in the mix.

"We publicly have said there are probably four people right now that have been the narrowed-down choices," Conway said. "That includes Gen. [David] Petraeus and Sen. Bob Corker from Tennessee. Obviously, Gov. Romney's still in the mix. People have been talking about Mayor Giuliani."

CBS' Major Garrett reported Friday morning that retired Gen. James Mattis, who Trump tagged on Thursday as his choice for Defense secretary, supports Petraeus, a fellow retired general, to head the State Department, and Conway said Trump was impressed after meeting with Petraeus at Trump Tower.

"We know who makes the ultimate decision here and it's Donald Trump," Conway said. "But it does matter to him to take the counsel of these people whoever he trusts to be in his Cabinet."

Last weekend, Conway came under fire after saying Trump's supporters would feel betrayed if Romney was named to the State position, and she said Friday she was reflecting on the "breathtaking backlash that I was seeing and hearing in private communications."

"I've been on the record as talking about that," she said. "Mr. Trump has said that he gave me permission to talk about that publicly. So, I've been doing that. But ultimately, that decision is Donald Trump's. I would note there are a number of people in contention for that."

Trump told Fox News Ainsley Earhardt that "almost all" of his Cabinet picks will be announced next week, but Conway told Fox News that his decisions "can't be rushed because some in the media want a story that day or think he should be forming a Cabinet at that hour."

Meanwhile, Trump is considering ExxonMobil Corp. CEO Rex Tillerson as secretary of State, "Morning Joe" co-host Joe Scarborough said Thursday on Twitter.

Conway, however, was not asked about Tillerson, nor did she offer comment.
