Condoleezza Rice: 'Not in My DNA' to Run for President

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Monday ruled out a future run for the presidency, telling a morning news program that it's "not in my DNA."

"Doesn't everybody?" Rice responded, when asked on Fox News' "Fox and Friends" if she's given the idea some thought.

"I ran for presidency of the Rice family. I won at age 4."

But even though Rice says she does not want the Oval Office, she continues to have some input into important decisions, including suggesting that President Donald Trump nominate former Exxon Oil CEO Rex Tillerson as secretary of tate, and she defended that decision.

"First of all, he was a terrific CEO," Rice said. "He is an oil man. Oil people know the world like other people don't. They have to make long-term investments in really difficult places. They have to deal with difficult people . . . often working in very harsh circumstances. Sounds like a secretary of state? I really thought that he and the president might contact as business peers as well."

She does not believe Trump and Tillerson had met personally before, but she is sure Trump knew about him, as he "had a stellar reputation."

Rice said she believes Tillerson is doing very well already, as he has a good relationship with Trump, and she thought he was "brilliant" with his comments concerning the use of chemical weapons in the attack of a Syrian city by saying Moscow was either "complicit or incompetent" when it failed to ensure Syria had gotten rid of its chemical weapons stockpile.

"I would never have the nerve to say that," Rice said. "Good for him."

Rice remembered when she first met Russian President Vladimir Putin, noting at the time he was a deputy mayor and she would not have believed he would have come to power in the way he has.

"We know he was harboring deep resentment about the end of the Cold War," Rice said. "He saw collapse of the Soviet Union, he said, as a tragedy. He really believes he is re-establishing Russian authority, Russian influence in the world."

The United States must establish that it will not allow Russia to threaten its allies it the Baltic states or eastern Europe, said Rice, and she does believe the U.S. should arm Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Rice said she does respect Trump, as she respects anybody who is elected to the presidency.

"I think he is really starting to fill in the job," Rice said. "You know it's hard, [being] the first president in our history who had absolutely no experience in government of any kind. He brought really excellent people in, has great national security team. You're starting to see him feel what the American presidency can do . . . I think he is feeling the weight of that office."
