Lawmakers are risking a good evaluation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce if they do not get behind tax reform legislation whose "failure is not an option," the group's head warned Thursday.

"In the coming weeks, the Chamber will be launching a multi-faceted effort in support of comprehensive tax reform," Tom Donohue wrote in an open letter to Congress and congressional candidates.

"And a year from now, we will be evaluating congressional candidates based on their support of the free enterprise system and their willingness to govern, as demonstrated by what role they played in helping enact the first major tax reform in 30 years.

"Members of Congress be warned: Failure is not an option."

The letter was the latest example of the business community's frustration with the pace in Congress on business priorities; the Chamber and three other business groups sent a letter urging tax reform last month, The Hill reported.

"We are a quarter of the way through this Congress, but we are not yet where we need to be on key issues like healthcare, tax reform, and rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure," Donohue wrote. "Promises were made; promises must be kept."

Donohue also criticized Democrats for opposing policies "that are good for our country."

"The challenge of governing requires a willingness to step beyond looking for reasons to oppose things to finding reasons to support policies that are good for the country," he wrote. "The time has long since passed to get to 'yes' on healthcare, tax reform, and infrastructure investment."
