Hundreds of scientists that question global warming are urging President Donald Trump to pull the country out of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change, The Hill reports.

"Since 2009, the US and other governments have undertaken actions with respect to global climate that are not scientifically justified and that already have, and will continue to cause serious social and economic harm — with no environmental benefits," reads a letter, signed by more than 300 members of a group led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Alfred P. Sloan professor of meteorology, Richard Lindzen.

Trump has publicly questioned the validity of climate change, and he has suggested that he will pull out of the Paris Agreement that 132 countries have ratified.

"While we support effective, affordable, reasonable and direct controls on conventional environmental pollutants, carbon dioxide is not a pollutant," the letter continues. "To the contrary, there is clear evidence that increased atmospheric carbon dioxide is environmentally helpful to food crops and other plants that nourish all life. It is plant food, not poison."

In December, more than 800 "Earth science and energy experts" signed an open letter to Trump, calling on him to take six steps to address climate change, according to Scientific American

The letter from Lindzen's group, however, argues that "it is especially important for members of [Trump's] administrative team to hear from people like the signers of this letter, with the training needed to evaluate climate facts, and to offer sound advice. Climate discussions have long been political debates — not scientific discussions — over whether citizens or bureaucrats should control energy, natural resources and other assets."
