Schumer: Trump Speech 'Detached From Reality'

President Donald Trump's Tuesday night address to Congress will be "forgotten in a day or two," according to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

"Where's the action? Where's the doing things that help working people? That's what we want," Schumer said Wednesday on NBC's "Today."

The New York Democrat said he was not sold on the president's change in tone during the speech.

"With this president, more than any other, his speeches are detached from reality. In his campaign and even in his inaugural speech, he talks to the working people of America. But for the last 40 days, his actions have been decidedly on the side of the special interests hurting working America," Schumer said.

The president gave no sign to Schumer of any plan that Trump and Democrats could work together on.

"I'll say yes when he comes up with something that really helps working people and says, 'I want to work with Democrats. Here's my proposal. What's yours?'" Schumer said.

Trump's mention of being interested in immigration reform did not move Schumer.

"We've been to this movie before. This is the third time in the last month he's mentioned he might be for some kind of immigration reform, then a day later, his advisers, his base made him pull it back."

"He's got to do something, not for special interests, but for working people," Schumer said.

Schumer also reacted to the speech Tuesday night after it concluded, on CNN.

"The American people don't want a speech. Heard a lot of those. They want action," he said.
