Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley has kept up his reputation as a dogged investigator with an independent streak to emerge as a constant thorn in the side to President Donald Trump in connection with the probe over Russian meddling in the U.S. elections, The Hill reported Monday.

The Republican Iowa senator has taken several steps that show he is intent on getting at the truth even though the president is from his party.

"He's got a strong sense of right and wrong and I think that sense even surpasses party, which around here is a real virtue," said California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top-ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Grassley has threatened to subpoena Trump family members and associates in connection to the Russian probe and emphatically shot down an opinion from Trump's Office of Legal Counsel that only committee chairmen have the authority to request official inquiries of the executive branch, not other members.

He also has been instrumental is backing Attorney General Jeff Sessions from harsh criticism from Trump, warning the White House that if Sessions was fired there would be no time for confirmation hearings this year for a new attorney general, KCCI DeMoines reported.

The extent to which Grassley has gone to make sure the Russia investigation is fair "is vintage Charles Grassley," Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn told the Hill. "He believes in strong oversight and he's going to be as aggressive as he feels like he needs to be in order to get it done. Chuck Grassley has a reputation for rigorous oversight unmatched perhaps by anybody else in the Senate."

Grassley, who has made investigations and oversight a priority throughout his career, said that no one at the White House or among the Senate GOP leadership has tried to dissuade him from the steps he has taken with the Russian probe.

However, many Republicans took issue with his investigation of Trump's firing FBI Director James Comey, which many see as merely giving Democrats a platform with which to criticize Trump.
