Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley is urging the FBI to disclose if President Donald Trump is under investigation.

While testifying before the committee last week, former FBI Director James Comey refused to say if Trump was being investigated, citing confidential information.

"The American people deserve to know if senior government officials are under active criminal or intelligence investigation," Grassley said Thursday at an executive business meeting, according to Town Hall. Grassley claimed that he met with Comey behind closed doors, and that in March the director briefed him and the ranking member on the committee, Sen. Diane Feinstein, on the targets of the FBI's investigation into reports of Russian interference in the presidential election.

"Shortly after Director Comey briefed us, I tweeted that he should be transparent. I said he should tell the public what he told Senator Feinstein and me about whether the FBI is or is not investigating the President," Grassley said. "On Tuesday, the President's letter said that Director Comey told him he was not under investigation. Senator Feinstein and I heard nothing that contradicted the President's statement. Now Mr. Comey is no longer the FBI director. But the FBI should still follow my advice. It should confirm to the public whether it is or is not investigating the President. Because it has failed to make this clear, speculation has run rampant."

On Thursday, Grassley said that during that nothing during his briefing “indicated or contradicted what the president said” in his letter firing Comey, which said the director informed him three times that Trump was not under investigation.

"The question ought to be... is it appropriate for the people that answer the question [that Trump] asked," he added. "I'll leave it up to Comey to decide if it was appropriate . . . if he violated anything by telling the president."

He concluded that "There's some point where the public's business ought to be more public if you're going to have accountability.”
