Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, asked Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein for updates on investigations into acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe in a letter he sent Wednesday.

Grassley asked if investigators had found any conflicts in those probes, and noted that three investigations are looking into McCabe.

"First, the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General is examining his failure to recuse himself from the Clinton investigation due to his political relationship with (Virginia Gov. Terry) McAuliffe. Second, the Office of Special Counsel (OSC) is investigating allegations that he violated the Hatch Act by engaging in political campaign activities. Third, he also is reportedly the subject of a pending Equal Employment Opportunity complaint by a female FBI agent for sex discrimination," Grassley noted in the letter.

He also questioned why McCabe did not recuse himself from investigations involving Michael Flynn, President Donald Trump's former national security adviser. Grassley pointed to reports that three FBI employees witnessed McCabe making "disparaging remarks" about Flynn before and during the time Flynn was involved in the Russia investigation.

Grassley, the Senate Judiciary chairman, told the Daily Caller on Thursday that he does not yet plan to ask McCabe to testify before his committee. "I wouldn't say we would not, but not at this point," he said.

In the letter, Grassley asked Rosenstein to "provide a written explanation of the steps you intend to take as Mr. McCabe's supervisor to address the appearance of political and other conflicts of interest outlined above."

Grassley also commented on McCabe back in May, saying he should not take over the FBI. "He's got political problems… I don't think he's the person that should be taking over," the senator told reporters on May 10, according to The Hill.
