Dem Sen. Coons: Trump's Tweets Just 'Ongoing Tactic of Distracting'

President Donald Trump's attack tweets Thursday aimed at MSNBC personalities was all "part of his ongoing tactic of distracting," Democratic Sen. Chris Coons told CNN on Friday.

"Frankly, this is just part of his ongoing tactic of distracting," Coons told "New Day" host Chris Cuomo.

"We've got a situation in Capitol Hill where the Senate Republican version of Trumpcare is floundering," Coons, D-Del., said. "They had promised that they'd take a vote this week; they delayed that. They promised they'd have a revised version of it by Friday; they don't."

Trump on Thursday took aim at "Morning Joe" co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, calling him "psycho" and her "low I.Q crazy Mika" who was "bleeding badly from a face-lift" in January.

Just part of Trump's game of distraction, Coons said.

"Frankly, I just think this was the president once again lashing out at someone in the media, in this particular case, in a personally offensive and unacceptable way, partly just to distract us so that we are spending this morning talking about the president's tweets and about an interpersonal fight between him and someone whom I respect, rather than talking about the impact on Americans … of the healthcare bill," Coons said.

It's not the first time a lawmaker has levied that accusation against Trump, who has been accused by liberals of bombing Syria to distract from the Russia probe and stating former President Barack Obama had Trump Organization wiretapped to do the same.

"I think his tweets tell the story," Rep. Adam Schiff, ranking Democrat of the House Intelligence Committee said in April.

"And the story is look over there — at leaks, and look over there — at anything the Obama administration we can claim did wrong on incidental collection or anything else . . . But whatever you do, under no circumstances look here, at me or at Russia."
