Politico: Christie May Announce '16 Run as Early as Next Week

By    |   Tuesday, 23 Jun 2015 10:06 PM

New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie may announce a presidential bid as soon as next week, Politico reports.

Aides have already said Christie isn't likely to make a move into the crowded GOP primary race until the New Jersey legislature finalizes the state budget around the end of June.

But recent travels and staffing changes appear to show he's closing in on a declaration.

Christie's campaign-in-waiting announced two additional staff hires in New Hampshire, and earlier this month, longtime Christie aide Maria Comella took a senior position at his political action action committee, Politico reports.

Meanwhile, the Asbury Park Press reports three of Christie's Cabinet officials, including state Treasurer Andrew Sidamon-Eristoff, have announced they're leaving the administration. Yet another hint came earlier this month when Christie said his family was on board with a potential campaign, asserting: "This is about me now," Bloomberg Politics reports.

An announcement about Christie's White House ambitions would mark a turnaround for the beleaguered politician, whose Bridge-gate scandal derailed what had appeared to be a GOP rising star's political trajectory.

His standing at home is still bruised, however, with a poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind showing Christie's approval rating at just 30 percent; 55 percent disapprove of his job performance.

Christie joins a crowded field that is still growing; Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is expected to launch his own presidential bid Wednesday in Kenner, La.
