Chinese media outlets on Tuesday sent a tough message to President-elect Donald Trump, with one newspaper writing that he should "stop acting like the diplomatic rookie he is," reports Time.com.

Trump last week made waves on the international front when he spoke with Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen in what was later described as a congratulatory call. The conversation was the first between a president or president-elect and Taiwan since 1979 when the U.S. broke off diplomatic relations with the island to observe the "One China" policy.

China was not happy with the news and lodged a formal complaint with the United States quickly after. Trump then proceeded to set off another firestorm when he tweeted "Did China ask us if it was OK to devalue their currency" and "build a massive military complex? I don't think so!"

China, which uses state media to get its message across, reacted harshly.

"Trump may dislike, distrust the diplomatic establishment in Washington D.C., and aspire to rework U.S. foreign policies," China Daily wrote in a Dec. 6 editorial. "But he should first come to terms with the real, not imagined, reality of international relations before wielding the scalpel, because a misstep as president will be far more damaging than one as president-elect."

Meanwhile, China Daily wrote: "To stop acting like the diplomatic rookie he is, the next U.S. president needs help in adapting to his forthcoming role change. Otherwise, he will make costly troubles for his country, and find himself trying to bluster his way through constant diplomatic conflagrations."
