Carson: 'Major Problems Brewing' for GOP If Outside Candidate Nominated

If neither Donald Trump nor Ted Cruz are selected as the GOP presidential nomination at this summer's Republican National Convention, there will be "major problems brewing" for the party, former candidate Ben Carson, who now backs Trump, said Monday.

"You're going to create so much friction, and of course, that will be a wonderful thing for the Democrats, no question about it," the retired neurosurgeon told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program

"They would love that, [and] be dancing in the streets. But it would be a disaster for the Republicans."

Carson's support of Trump has often come under question, including over the weekend, when he told radio show host John Catsimatidis that Trump has "some major defects, there's no question about it," and responded that there are "probably" better people than Trump.

On Monday, he told the "Morning Joe" program he does believe that of the three people still in the campaign, "I believe [Trump] is the best one to be able to resolve the issues. Now, if we end up with a contested convention and things work out in a different way and it seems fair then of course you're going to support whoever the nominee is, but again things must be open, they must be fair and they must be apparent."

But even then, said Carson, he does not want to support someone for the nomination that has not been actively seeking it.

And when it comes to knowing about foreign policy, Carson said Trump will have experts to help in that arena.

"I don't care how much time he spends, for instance, reading about Russian history, he's not going to be an expert on Russia, nor is Sen. Cruz, nor is Sen. Bernie Sanders," he said. "None of them are going to be. You have to be able to utilize the right kinds of people."

Carson said he also believes Trump would be a strong general election candidate against Hillary Clinton.

"He's brought in millions of voters who normally wouldn't be there and people from the middle and even testimony from the Democratic side and these people are enthusiastic voters," said Carson.

"If he becomes the nominee, a lot of the ones who are not supporting him now will recognize that he is the candidate and he is going to be a lot better than somebody who has a completely different philosophy."
