Former GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina says the lawmakers who wrote the controversial Republican Senate healthcare bill need to show "humility and empathy" because "this is about people's lives."

Fiorina said she was in agreement with fellow Republican Sen. Mike Lee's criticism of the bill as a "one-size-fits-all scheme" that "doesn't even significantly reform American healthcare" and which he can't support in its current form.

"As Sen. Mike Lee correctly points out, true leadership always requires humility: the understanding that we do not have every answer and that sometimes we need help to find a solution," Fiorina, the ex-CEO of Hewlett-Packard, said in a Twitter post.

"Government at both the state and federal level, has been engaged in the regulation of health insurance and health care for half a century. The consequence: failure of the system for too many Americans and their families."

She adds that "empathy" is another "vital ingredient" of leadership.

"Politicians at every level must remember that health care is deeply personal and fundamentally important to every individual," Fiorina writes.

"This is about far more than a battle between conservatives, moderates and liberals, and about more than Democrats versus Republicans. It is certainly about more than the next election."

"This is about people's lives. Leaders serve others. Leaders solve problems. Leadership means courage and character; humility and empathy."

On Monday, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimated the Senate bill would leave 22 million more Americans uninsured in 2026 than under President Barack Obama's healthcare law now in effect.
